Dress For Success

DRESS CODE

At RCHS we expect individuals to dress in a manner that is appropriate.  A good guideline is - if you were to go work at a store in Rosetown, what would you wearWould what you are wearing be acceptable in most stores and by most individuals?  In past years, issues were arising where individuals were pushing the boundaries of what staff and students felt were appropriate dress.  The following is what came about:

Dress For Success – Warmer temperatures, along with the various fashion trends, presented our school with a challenge and an opportunity. Our staff & students were noticing that choices of clothing for some were becoming far from modest.  We were also seeing students making derogatory comments towards, and about, others’ lack of clothing.  Our staff knew that addressing inappropriate clothing is a bit of a tough area to deal with.  The challenges we were faced with:
  • What is fashion and style?
  • Who sets the “rules” or “norms” as to what is appropriate to wear at various places (church, school, work, beach, hanging out at a friend’s house, etc.)?
  • How do we help our students become aware of the issue without bringing in a set of rules and consequences?
The result of some thinking and pondering, was that a few staff members put together a presentation that hopefully put across a positive message of how to dress for success!  Each grade had the chance to hear the message and we were impressed with how most of the students responded.  Students who tested those boundaries after the presentation were individually spoken to.  Our goal was (and still is) to have students make wise choices and use good judgment.

RCHS guidelines for appropriate dress are listed below:
  • Students are expected to adopt acceptable standards of dress.
  • All students are expected to be clean and tidy in person and clothing.  Simplicity and good taste are expected of everyone.  “Good taste” would include:
    • no low cut shirts
    • no crop top style shirts
    • no sheer shirts with bandeaus
    • skirts and shorts of appropriate length
    • no underwear showing
    • no apparel that is racist, sexist, demeaning to others, depicts violence, pornographic, or promotes drugs or alcohol
With these guidelines and expectations in place, RCHS will be seen as a school where staff and students make good judgements and choices with their clothing selections for school.
